Dr. Monasky is a graduate of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and underwent neurosurgery training at Mayo Clinic and the University of Maryland followed by a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is the only physician in the country board certified in estate planning by the Estate Planning Law Specialist Board (EPLS), which is accredited by the American Bar Association. Dr. Monasky passed a comprehensive national examination designed for actively practicing estate planning attorneys to acquire this designation. He maintains active practices in both law and neurosurgery, and recently earned the Certified Financial Planning (CFP®) designation.
Dr. Monasky has practiced neurosurgery for 25 years and law for 10 years. He spends half his time practicing neurosurgery in South Dakota and the other half practicing law with a concentration on asset protection, estate, tax, and business planning. His virtual practice focuses on drafting trusts and creating business entities utilizing highly favorable South Dakota asset protection, trust, and business laws. His clients consist of physicians, particularly surgeons, and attorneys, business owners, and other high net worth individuals. Dr. Monasky has drafted hundreds of complex trusts to achieve his clients’ desires. He has given lectures to physicians, attorneys, accountants, and trust officers – many of which have qualified for continuing legal education (CLE), continuing medical education (CME), and other professional continuing education credits. He recently formed MD Wealth Protector, LLC, a niche, virtual law firm catering to physicians, surgeons, attorneys, business owners, and other high net worth individuals.
He is licensed to practice both medicine and law in North and South Dakota. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS), and the American College of Legal Medicine (FCLM). He is an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA), Christian Legal Society (CLS), North and South Dakota State Medical Associations, American Bar Association, State Bar Association of North Dakota and State Bar of South Dakota. He is a member of the Asset Protection Council of the Real Property, Trust, and Estate Law (RPTE) section of the American Bar Association. Additionally, he is the only physician member of Wealth Counsel, a National Association of estate planning attorneys. He has earned the accredited estate planner (AEP®) designation by the National Association of Estate Planning Councils. He belongs to the Financial Planning Association and is an affiliate member of the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.

Mikayla was born and raised in Bismarck, ND. She graduated from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND cum laude in 2006 with a degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences, a Pre-Law Concentration, and double minors in Business and Political Science. She graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law in December 2016, where she also earned an Indian Law Certificate. She graduated a semester early from both undergraduate and law school.
Mikayla’s first career is in life insurance and financial planning. She has been in the financial industry for just shy of a decade. In 2008, Mikayla began an almost six-year career with New York Life Insurance Company and NYLIFE Securities, LLC. During her career at New York Life, she also held multiple securities licenses after passing the following Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) exams: Series 6 – Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Representative Exam (IR); Series 63 – Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination; and Series 7 – General Securities Representative Exam (GS). She also earned her Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) from and is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA). Mikayla earned NAIFA’s National Quality Producer Award twice as well as several production-based awards throughout her career at New York Life, including a trip to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Her focus on sophisticated estate planning led to her collaboration with Dr. Mark Monasky. Working closely with Dr. Monasky and other attorneys inspired Mikayla to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming an attorney. In the fall of 2014, Mikayla embarked on an active and rewarding academic career at the University of North Dakota School of Law.
In her first year at the UND School of Law, Mikayla competed in a national trial team competition in Arlington, VA and she and her partner won an award for Outstanding Prosecution. During her second year, she was the President of the Student Trial Lawyers Association and the Secretary of the Law Women’s Caucus. She was also an active member of and Associate Editor for the North Dakota Law Review. She is a lifelong member of the Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity.
Mikayla worked part-time during law school for Dr. Monasky starting in the spring of 2014. After law school, Mikayla teamed up with Dr. Monasky full-time and is currently his Associate Attorney. Mikayla and Dr. Monasky share a passion for serving and helping others protect their hard-earned wealth through MD Wealth Protector, LLC.
